Shoulder Holsters – Which Harness is Best?
Shoulder holsters are composed of several modules, perhaps the most important module is the shoulder harness as the overall comfort of the rig will depend on it. Each shoulder holster rig comprises a combination of the holster (where the handgun rides), the harness (that part of the holster that rides over your shoulders) and the off side attachment (often including a magazine holder).
When choosing a shoulder holster for purchase – it’s important to choose a good shoulder holster harness design. There are three basic designs on the market today – a basic suspender style shoulder harness (often called a cross harness or X harness system, a shoulder pad harness (deluxe harness), and a single side harness (often called a sidewinder, etc.).
Shoulder holsters – because of there inherent design to hold considerable weight for extended periods of time – must be comfortable. Keeping comfort, usability, durability and practicality in mind – we’ll explore the three basic shoulder holster harness types.
The sidewinder or single side harness gets the name from its design. In my opinion, these are the absolute worst types of shoulder holsters on the market and we refuse to sell them. Why? Shoulder holsters must be comfortable and sidewinders are not. Designed to wrap under your arm opposite the handgun side – all the weight of the shoulder rig is sucked up into your armpit. If you’re like myself, the only thing I like in my armpit is deodorant. Whatever shoulder holster system you decide to purchase – don’t buy a side-winding harness.
Next is the cross harness shoulder holster or sometimes called an X harness. These are low cost holster systems and ride over your shoulders much like suspenders. Although these are not the best shoulder holster harnesses, they do provide adjustability, comfort, good usability and because of there lower cost – we consider them acceptable.
Lastly, the best shoulder holster harness for any rig is the shoulder pad harness (or deluxe harness as shown above in the top photo). These shoulder holster harnesses provide the most comfort as the weight of the rig is evenly distributed over your shoulders – providing maximum comfort. Additionally, they provide 7-way adjustment – enabling you to fine tune the feel of your shoulder holster rig to your body type. They are durable and adjustable to fit individuals ranging from a size small to a size XXL. Although these shoulder holster rigs cost a little more money – they are totally worth it.
