Couldn't the Supreme Court just make a clarifying ruling on the lower court's decision? And not, make a sweeping decision about an individual's right, as we hope they will.

The Supreme Court could do that but I don't believe they will. A number of the Justices on this Court seem quite eager to get their 2 cents in about the 2nd Amendment.
